About this Entry: In response to the COVID-19 crisis, SMU postponed its May 2020 Commencement ceremony, giving the University time to make adequate preparations for a safe, socially distanced event. On Saturday, August 15, SMU hosted 1,082 graduates and 4,340 guests outdoors in Gerald J. Ford Football Stadium. This meaningful, historic ceremony retained many beloved traditions, and was designed to be safe and socially distant. Graduates wearing “Class of 2020” masks were seated on the field, and their guests sat in family clusters in the stands. That evening, the SMU campus was illuminated in red and blue to honor the graduates.
